Appointments
Dermatology Specialists of Charlotte requires each and every patient to present a current and valid insurance card at every office visit. Your appointment will be rescheduled if needed. A current and valid photo ID will be required for each visit. This requirement is in conjunction with the Federal Trade Commission’s new Red Flag Rule Program in an effort to help protect you from identity theft. Thank you for your cooperation in helping Dermatology Specialists of Charlotte protect you!
Appointments
To schedule an appointment or for questions, please call
704-943-3714 for an appointment.
Work-in Appointments
We accommodate work in appointments on an as needed basis for our established patients. There is also a wait list that will notify you of an appointment cancellation and offer you an earlier appointment as they become available. For the schedule to work optimally, we need your cooperation on the cancellation policy below. |
|
Follow up Appointments
These appointments are scheduled in order to best care for your skin. Many skin conditions require close monitoring and adjustment of the medication for best results. Many medications require monitoring on a regular basis due to their possible side effects. Your follow up appointments are important for your health.
Appointment Cancellation Policy
Please call our office to cancel any appointment at least 24 hours prior to the appointment. Canceling your appointment with a reasonable notice allows us to offer this appointment to someone else who may need to be seen right away. We do not overbook to compensate for "no show" appointments. We can keep an optimal schedule only if you keep or cancel appointments as requested. This allows for a time efficient encounter for both the patient and the physician.
Inclement Weather Policy
Dermatology Specialists of Charlotte will post delays and closings on the following TV channels by 6:30 am: WSOC (Channel 9), WBTV (Channel 3) and WCNC (Channel 36). These stations also have websites that will post this information. DSC will post a message on their website as well. If no messages are posted, then DSC is open during our normal business hours. |

Phone Calls
Please call 704-943-3714 for Dr. Nixon during office hours for all non-emergency situations, including appointments, prescription refills and non-urgent questions. If you need to reach the doctor, please leave your message on the nurse’s line for your doctor. Do not leave messages on the after-hours line for the physicians during business hours.
Emergencies
For a life threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately. For non-life threatening emergencies that cannot wait until office hours, please call the appropriate office, pick the option for the after-hours line and you will be forwarded directly to your physician. Non-emergency calls will be returned the morning of the next business day.

Prescriptions/Prescription Refill Policy
We regret that we cannot refill any prescriptions when appointments are missed. Please reschedule the appointment and ask for refills then. No prescription will be renewed if more than 1 year has passed since your last visit. Oral medications and some topical creams require more frequent visits.
Please check with your pharmacy if you are unsure if you have any refills left.
You may call our office and leave a message on the nurses' line with your name, birth date, name and dosage of medication, preferred pharmacy name and number and instructions. We can mail, fax or have the prescriptions at the front desk for you to pick up. Please allow 24 business hours for any refill. The on call physician after office hours will not refill medications.

Insurance/ Payment Options / Billing and Insurance
We welcome new and existing patients and accept most insurance plans. If we are participating providers for your insurance plan, you will be responsible for your co-pay and deductibles at the time of your visit. Co-payments and payments for services must be paid at the time of service. We accept cash, checks, debit cards, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
We will file your health insurance for you. Any additional money due based on your insurance explanation of benefits forms will be due immediately upon notification by us or your insurance company. We accept payments in person, via mail or over the telephone. We do not have an online payment option at this time.
Many insurance companies consider minor procedures such as skin biopsies, liquid nitrogen treatment for pre-cancers, warts and removal of inflamed moles and keratoses to be surgery. Any surgery deductibles or coinsurance would then apply. Your insurance company makes this decision, not DSC. All coding is performed according to the evaluation and treatment provided to the patient using AMA (American Medical Association) guidelines. There is no variability in this coding.
Any procedures considered to be cosmetic are not covered by insurance and therefore, payment is expected at the time of service. We cannot file any service to insurance that is cosmetic. We will notify you if we believe a planned procedure is cosmetic and discuss costs prior to performing the procedure.
Your coverage is determined by the administrator of your plan, usually the employer and the insurance company. Each insurance company has multiple plans based on these negotiations with employers. Check with your plan administrator for specific details.
In general, you pay a copay for each visit, whether for a new problem or the follow-up of one. Your plan may also have a deductible or coinsurance.
- A deductible refers to the amount of money you have to pay before your insurance company pays for any health benefits. Once you meet this amount, your insurance benefits go into effect.
- Coinsurance, also known as percentage participation, translates into the insurance company paying a certain percentage of your health care bills, while you pay the remaining percentage.
- Refer to your health insurance benefits booklet for your specific benefit level.
